A Simple Candle Lighting Ritual

The first lighting of your candle is an opportunity to create ritual and intention. Ritual is a powerful way to drop into presence, check in with yourself and ground your energy. Here is a simple guided ritual that you can do anytime you light a candle. You can also incorporate this ritual into your regular self care, meditation or yoga practices.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Journal and pen

  • Quiet, comfortable space to be

Sit comfortably. If it feels good to you, take three deep breaths and settle into your body. Maybe close your eyes for a few moments and turn inwards. Next, call in your spirit guides. These could be ancestors, your beloved dead, plants, animals, places or any energy that feels safe, loving and protective for you. Once you feel settled and connected, begin to simply study the candle tin like you would a piece of art or a tarot card. Notice what colors, images or symbols on the label stand out to you. How does the artwork make you feel? What does the name of the candle evoke for you? You may wish to write these thoughts down in your journal.

Next remove the lid and gaze at the surface of the candle. Breathe in its scent and let your eyes rest on the herbs and gemstones that adorn its surface. Carefully light the candle and set it right in front of you so that you can continue to observe it. This moment is especially beautiful to witness. Watch the flame grow and the wax begin to melt and pool around it. Continue to breathe, notice the sensations in your body, and continue writing in your journal if you wish.

Some journal prompts to reflect on:

  • How does the scent and decoration make you feel? Are you familiar with the gemstones and herbs? What do they symbolize for you?

  • Imagine stepping into the illustrated scene pictured on the lid of the tin. Visualize yourself being in that place. What do you notice or feel?

  • Are there any images, dreams, memories or stories from your own life that come to mind?

  • What intention you would like to set for yourself in this moment? Do you want to let something go? Or perhaps there’s something new you wish to call into your life?

Once you finish journaling, allow the candle to continue burning as you transition into your usual self care or relaxation practices and routines. Remember to allow the entire surface of your candle to become liquid before extinguishing to create an even burn memory in the wax. This can take a few hours, so don’t rush your process!
